“Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one is who in authority, then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, of the is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is a servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.” Romans 13:2-4
At present Canada has a crisis. Protesting vaccine mandates, truck drivers have rallied in Ottawa, demanding an end to mandates and restrictions. The current rules for drivers crossing the U.S.-Canada border for unvaccinated drivers, requiring quarantine etc., basically puts them out of a job unless they comply with orders they disagree with. In other words, get jabbed or lose your vocation. Thus, drivers who figure that natural immunity (having previously had COVID) and its low mortality rate among those not dealing with co-morbidities make taking the vaccine unnecessary. Their position is not, repeat not, illogical. Natural immunity is real. It’s always been real. And if something is logical, it’s scientific because science depends upon logic. No logic, no science. Therefore, since the Canadian government, nor most other Western governments, allow for natural immunity in their mandate madness, their orders are not morally lawful.
So, why should Mr. Trudeau resign?
First, he has abdicated his role as a Biblical civil magistrate as noted above. By illogically demanding the livelihood of his hard-working citizens, he has claimed the right to define what is good. God has given the sword to the state to avenge interpersonal evil. The Canadian government, through such mandates, has turned the sword against those, like these truckers, who merely wish to obey God’s order to work (Genesis 2:15; 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12; Colossians 3:23-24). Work is a gift and command from the Lord. Man is to glorify God through his/her vocation to the service of neighbor. The civil magistrate is God’s servant for our good. He is given the “sword” to punish anyone who violates the Biblical rights of another citizen. If someone is attacked, or they’re deprived of their property directly or through fraud, the state is to avenge them. This is what the God has given us the state for…it’s His. He defines it.
The state can’t define its own moral role or else it’s God. The right to avenge is the right to initiate violence against someone who disagrees. This isn’t something to be taken lightly. It’s pure and raw power. For a law to be legit it must be moral. For something to be moral it must be grounded in the Word of God. Every law has the threat of violence behind it. For something to be law means that the state has the right to kill those who disagree. A law without force backing it up is no law at all. That’s the whole point of “the sword” in Romans 13. Mr. Trudeau is wielding it in vain by assuming the power to define vengeance according to his own standard. For this reason, he’s a tyrant. And a tyrant is a ruler pretending to be God.
Second, Mr. Trudeau has slandered his neighbor. By calling the protesters “racist” and “misogynistic” he’s violated the commandment of the Lord.
“You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:16
“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him…but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:17-18
Loving our neighbor, as evidenced in these verses, means reasoning with them if/when there’s a dispute. It means giving them the same benefit of the doubt you’d like. Slander is an attack upon their motive and character. It’s akin to murder in that it “kills” the character/heart of the person you disagree with (Matthew 5:22). For the leader of Canada to slander the powerless whom he disagrees with, who merely wish to earn their pay, is an abominable sin. Mr. Trudeau must both resign and repent for such a sin.
Third, Mr. Trudeau and his allies are convinced that “science” is on their side. But the fact of COVID-19 nowhere leads to the moral power to obliterate ethical and political freedom. Science can’t be illogical. The slander is that anyone who disagrees with lockdowns and mandates is anti-science. The opposite is actually true. For example, the burden of proof to convict a murderer is understandably high. To deprive a person of their life and freedom requires that the state meet a high bar of proof. The standard is “beyond a reasonable doubt.” To call natural immunity “tinfoil hat conspiracy theories” is illogical. To say that a healthy person who’s already had COVID doesn’t need a vaccine isn’t unscientific. To suggest otherwise is illogical. To demand otherwise is tyrannical. Say what you will about the lockdowns two years ago when the world was unaware of the true nature of the threat it faced. But here in 2022, in the absence of evidence beyond a reasonable doubt, the evisceration of liberty is tyrannical and the truckers are correct to protest for their freedom. Mr. Trudeau, nor any other leader in the world, has logic on their side when it comes to curbing personal freedom in light of the facts of COVID-19.
The logic of resisting the vaccine is this: the survival rate of COVID-19 is well over 99% for the vast majority of people. The vaccine is new and revolutionary – mRNA vaccines have never been used before in history and are not, repeat not, traditional vaccines. Many people wonder if there will be longterm health consequences for such a new type of vaccine. This is a reasonable concern. To answer it with slander heightens the distrust of it. For a perfectly healthy 30 year-old to say that he/she likes his chances without the vaccine, based on the data, isn’t illogical. We may disagree with it, but the data is clear. Smallpox had a nearly 40% fatality rate. To compare COVID-19 to smallpox is preposterous and unscientific (to use Mr. Trudeau’s favorite word). Plus, why would someone who already had smallpox get the vaccine? To issue commandments under the guise of public health while ignoring natural immunity isn’t logical. Surely the authorities and “experts” understand that. This means that something else is goal and not public health. Since health experts who deny natural immunity can’t be credible and given to either hysteria or lust for power and maintain their credibility, they must be resisted. To deprive citizens of liberty requires a very, very high bar of evidence that’s simply never been met by the reality of this virus.
Mr. Trudeau’s use of the word science is much like a famous character in The Princess Bride who kept using the word “inconceivable”. If he’s not wrong about it, then he’s lying. That means he’s either incompetent or corrupt. Neither type of men should be leading a nation. We call on him and his allies to resign in the name of the Lord. And we call on His church to faithfully preach the non-contradictory doctrine of the civil magistrate. Pastors and church leaders who support tyranny in the name of science must repent as well. We call on them to study the great doctrines of Scripture. We call on them to preach the supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ to a fallen world and the excellency of His perfect law/word. If they refuse this, if they disagree, let them present a philosophy of life consistent with Scripture where the civil authorities have unlimited power. Let them present their case. This isn’t a drill. This is an issue that cuts to the heart of one’s devotion – either to God or to man and his tyrannical impulses.
